How Radiation Therapy Works

Radiation therapy can be part of aggressive anti-cancer treatment with a curative intent or part of palliative care to maintain comfort and quality of life. It can only treat a specific area of the body at a time, allowing our team to focus precisely on the affected region while minimizing impact to surrounding healthy tissue.

Radiation therapy is often used following surgery to improve control of the cancer and prevent local tumor regrowth. It can also be used by itself as an alternative to surgery, especially for tumors that cannot be safely removed.

Treatment Options and Protocols

Treatment protocols vary depending on the goal of therapy and the type of cancer being treated. Options may range from daily treatments to weekly treatments.

When treatment is aimed at maintaining quality of life rather than achieving a cure, side effects are often minimal. Your oncologist will carefully explain what to expect, provide a customized plan, and ensure your pet’s comfort throughout the process.

Treatment with a linear accelerator does not cause a patient to become radioactive. It is completely safe to cuddle, walk, and interact with your pet immediately after each session.
