What Is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy is a newer treatment option in cats and dogs, and available options are both tumor-type and species-specific. This approach works by stimulating or supporting the immune system’s natural ability to recognize and attack cancer cells, rather than targeting the cancer directly through surgery or chemotherapy.

Melanoma is the cancer with the most immunotherapy treatment options currently available. However, research in veterinary oncology continues to expand, and new therapies are being developed for additional cancer types in both dogs and cats.

How Immunotherapy Works with Other Treatments

Many chemotherapy medications also have an immunomodulatory impact — meaning they can influence or enhance the immune system — and may be used in combination with immunotherapy for cancers that do not yet have a specific approved option known to be safe and effective.

Your oncologist will carefully evaluate your pet’s cancer type, health status, and treatment goals before recommending an individualized plan that may include immunotherapy on its own or alongside other treatments.
